We had our class today at Bilik Mesyuarat Fakulti. The class started with few announcement from Dr Wan. Our previous project Adopt A Microbe is change to an individual task which we can also selected microbe that cause disease and do an online scrapbook. Our group task is then replaced by Thank A Microbe. We still have to do a poster about selected microbe. Each group have to choose the given theme that are

  • medicine
  • industrial
  • food
  • agriculture
  Our group first decide want to do about industrial but there are already two groups doing about industrial. So we decided to do about beneficial microbe to the environment. We also has to sent our learning journal every week. The dateline is on every Sunday 11.59 pm . An example of an learning journal is show to us for make us understand what is the purpose doing learning journal. I hope that I can make an excellent learning journal for every class . A few assignment we have to complete in the same time but different dateline. Most of the assignment  have to search online information and sent via LMS or Edmodo. We continue our lesson after that.

 We learn about history in microbiology. The first microbiologist is Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek which using his handcrafted microscopes. The microscope is quite scary to use for me. The first to observe and describe single-celled organism refer as animalcules, because of the microorganism is moving. The theory is reconfirmed by Robert Hooke which coined the word cell and marked the beginning of CELL THEORY.
 The discover led to interest of scientific community which proposed Spontaneous Generation, life arise spontaneously from non-living matter which to me it is quite not a logical theory.There are many agree and disagree statement with experiment from scientist that time. The was another theory called Biogenesis arise at the same time until resolved by Louis Pasteur in 1861.
  
  We also learn about pasteurization. How the idea come from. Not to forget about vaccine by Edward Jenner who risking his son life. However he made to make a vaccine for his son. He it is lucky his son do not die.
 

 We then proceed to the next chapter, Microscope. During school day I only one type of  microscope that is light microscope. When learn this chapter I feel amaze by the picture shown by Dr Wan taken using different type of microscope. Different type microorganism has to use different microscope which sounds so complicated to me and making more complicated it has to be stain by using different stain method we will learn next class.
 Types of microscope

  • fluorescent
  • electron
  • phase contrast
  • transmission
  We also have to use emersion oil which not very health. We must wash our hand after using it. Meanwhile learning about microscope we have also learn several fact about microorganism.
 
     Treponema Pallidium, spiral seed in colon that cause syphilis. Syphilis can cause blindness, problem with nervous system and heart problem. It also cause death.
 
 The sporangium produce zoospore when it is mature. Zoospore have flagella which make it motile.
 There are many zoospore in rumen of ruminant to help in digesting food. the ruminant will have a digestion problem without all of this microbe.

What I have learn:
-Microscope was improved the creation from time to time
-The Pasteur experiment disapprove Spontaneous Generation
-All living things need microbe to continue living
Microbe can cause disease but at the same time helping animal

26/9/14  Today we have our class at 8 o'clock early than the usual. We learn about External structure of prokaryote. I  a little bit shock when knowing we going to learn about external structure of prokaryote because we just send our mind map about internal structure of prokaryote. The second chapter we learn about cell wall and membrane structure of prokaryote. relate Microbial Ecology to other microbiology courses have covered and apply the knowledge in the future

 In previous subject I learn  their characteristics and uses. When I am studying Microbial ecology I get to know more about the place that I learn their characteristics  and uses. I also study lab of microbiology with the knowledge from both course I should be able to know how to find and isolate microbes. Different microbes stay in different places. Different microbes require different way to isolate them. For the future application, I think to solve a problems using microbes, the microbes that will solve the problems need to be find in the problems occur. For example, bacteria that involve in bio remediation usually live and isolated in polluted area since there are able to withstands the pollutants.
