 We have our class today with Dr Wan at 2.2 Biotech 2.We learn about virus.Virus is not living organism until take over host.Virus is major causes of disease.
 Acellular Agents

  • Viruses-protein and nucleic acid
  • Viroids-only RNA
  • Satellites-only nucleic acid
  • Prions-protein only
Example of disease cause by Prion is Kuru. Kuru occured in Papua New Guinea because of tradition to eat dead family member brain.

Most virus is in hydrosphere Mostly in marine and sea.
The virus can be grow in embryonated egg.

Virus is important in evolution.One of the evolution of virus is ebola virus.During 2008 the host is monkey but now the host is bat.

Bacteriophages,bacterial virus kill only bad bacteria. It kill pathogenic bacteria in poultry.

Before this I thought that virus only cause disease but now I know that virus also can also kill bad bacteria.ow I also know that virus have many different type of structure.

What I have learn:
-Virus  major cause of virus
-Bacteriophages kill only bad bacteria


We continue our class with Datin Khadijah at 11 am.We learn about genetic recombination.Genetic recombination refers to arrangement of DNA from separate groups of genes.It usually involves DNA from different organisms.
Genetic Transfer in prokaryotes

  • Transformation-gene transfer from one bacterium to another as naked DNA in solution.Refer to Griffith's experiment
  • Transduction -Dna transferred fromdonor to recipient via bacteriophage.
  • Conjugation-require contact between donor and recipient cell

After this class I got to know that DNA transformation occur in many ways.The different transformation ,different product.

What I have learn:
-DNA from virulent can enter avirulent
-There are two types of transduction that are Generalized and Specialized Trasduction
-In plasmid transfer sex pilus formed

26/9/14  Today we have our class at 8 o'clock early than the usual. We learn about External structure of prokaryote. I  a little bit shock when knowing we going to learn about external structure of prokaryote because we just send our mind map about internal structure of prokaryote. Anyway the class carry on and I have fun learning about external structure of prokaryote.   Prokaryotes are a group of organisms that lack of cell nucleus or any other membrane bound organelle. What I have learn

          The first chapter of microbial ecology is The principles of ecology. When learning this chapter, I just realized that ecology is a big subject that has many principles and disciplines. I also learn about strategist microbes used that is r and k. r strategist has high reproductive rates while k strategist is more to adaptation. Another important aspect covered is homeostasis. Autotrophic succession happen when P:R> 1. P stands for photosynthesis, while R is respiration. Autotrophic succession cause accumulation of biomass. When P:R< 1, the situation is known as heterotrophic succession where consumption of organic matter is more than the production.   When studying next topic,Microbial Group and Microbial Nutrition Metabolism it is a  bit repetition on what we have learn before this.
